The Simpsons is an American adult animated series created by Matt Groening for the Fox Broadcasting Company. The series is a satirical portrayal of American life, embodied by the Simpson family, which includes Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie. Family was conceived by Groening shortly before he was invited to create a series of animated short films with producer James L. Brooks. He created a dysfunctional family and named the characters after members of his family, replacing his name with Bart; he thought Simpson was a funny name because it resembled “simpleton.” The shorts became part of the Tracy Ullman show on April 19, 1987.
