National Grand Coalition (NGC) flag bearer and presidential candidate for the 2018 elections, Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella (KKY) declared his running mate as engineer Andrew Karmoh Keili (AKK). Today’s announcement marks the end of long speculations from different political parties including the main opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) and the ruling All Peoples Congress (APC).
Andrew Keili studied Mining Engineering at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK before returning home to Sierra Leone to work in several capacities in various mining companies. He has over 30 years of experience in private industry and public institutions and has served on the Boards of many of them. He was a member of the National Policy Advisory Committee to the President of Sierra Leone from 2003 to 2008, Chairman, Board of Trustees for the National Social Security and Insurance Trust, Member of the National Environmental Protection Board, Member of the National Science and Technology Council, served on the Boards of five private sector companies, a Council Member of the Sierra Leone Chamber of Commerce and of the Sierra Leone Institution of Engineers and a past President of the CKC Old Boys Association.
He is currently an Executive Director of CEMMATS, the largest multidisciplinary Engineering Company in Sierra Leone. Andrew Keili is a Lay Preacher in the Anglican Church, and Chairman of the Church’s Development, Estate and Enterprises Board.
Political experts believe that Yumkella’s decision to name someone with Keili’s stature will help him win voters in South-Eastern Sierra Leone and he speaks fluent Mende that could propel him to State House.
The NGC repeats the same path of the People’s Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC) in 2007 which is nothing new for the APC. Both Candidates attended the Christ the King College (CKC) and both were once running for the flag bearer position of the SLPP and did not succeed instead alienated by its own countrymen.
