‘It would be fantastic to see Gareth Bale return to Tottenham this summer’, says former boss Harry Redknapp

Gareth Bale would favour a return to the Premier League over a move to Bayern Munich if he leaves Real Madrid this summer, according to former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp.

The Welshman’s future at the Bernabeu is in doubt as the transfer window approaches, having experienced a reduced role with the Spanish giants this season.

He has apparently fallen out of favour with manager Zinedine Zidane and has been dropped to the bench for a number of high-stakes games, including Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final against Bayern Munich.

Bale, who has 14 goals from 33 appearances for Real this season, is a reported summer target for Bayern and in a recent interview the winger refused to rule out a possible move to Germany.

However, the Welsh wizard has also been linked with a move back to England and Redknapp is crossing his fingers he makes a sensational return to north London.

“Gareth would be a great signing for Tottenham, it would be fantastic,” the former Spurs boss told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

“He’s an amazing player. He can play so many positions and in so many systems, there are so many strings to his bow, he’s such a fantastic talent.

“Going back to Tottenham – if he comes back [to the Premier League] he would only go to a top-six club, but it would be nice to see him go back to Spurs.”

Redknapp also believes a move to German champions Bayern this summer is unlikely for the Welshman, who he says would likely prefer to move closer to home after five seasons in Spain.

“I think he’ll come home, he’s a homeboy,” added the forward’s former coach.

“I remember giving him four or five days off at Tottenham, we didn’t have a game for two weeks or something, and he went back to wales to see his mum, he didn’t go abroad or anywhere exotic.

“He’s quite a steady eddy, I think he’d like to be back at home.”
